Prejudice Essay Cathedral - 1308 Words
Samantha Langert Professor Jereb English G110 18 September 2017 Prejudices in Cathedral Prejudice comes in all forms; whether it is due to someone s skin color, religion, or disability, fear of someone who is different than what you view as normal is apparent all around us. Miriam Webster defines Prejudice as ââ¬Å"injury or damage resulting from some judgment or action of another in disregard to oneââ¬â¢s rightsâ⬠. Although most people tend to associate prejudice with racism, that is not always the case. In quite a few instances of everyday life, it is hate towards another person you consider to be inferior and not normal. The Narrator also feels he has an inherent superiority to Robert because of this , placing a self-centered twist onto everything. For all of the Narrators prejudice towards others, he is more than happy to not place any of his critical and judgemental focus on himself. It is shown in glimpses of the story how the Narrator dictates his world by only what he can actually see, placing a limitation on himself that Robert does not have. ââ¬Å"It was beyond my understanding. Hearing this, I felt sorry for the blind man for a little bit. And then I found myself thinking what a pitiful life this woman must have ledâ⬠(139). The Narrator lacks what can be perceived as a sight into both his own, and others, emotions. It is further on that we come to realize how much the Narrator relies on his vision, thinking that Robertââ¬â¢s wife, Beulah, could have worn anything she wanted to, not because she felt like it, but because no one could appreciate how she beautiful or ugly she looks. Although the Narrator can obviously see, he does not realize the restrictions he placed upon himself and how those restrictions prevented him from wanting or doing anything greater with his ownShow MoreRelated Blind Faith in Raymond Carvers Cathedral Essay920 Words à |à 4 PagesBlind Faith in Raymond Carvers Cathedral à à à In the story Cathedral by Raymond Carver, the main character, goes through a major personal transformation.à At the beginning of the story, his opinions of others are filled with stereotypes, discrimination and prejudice.à Through interaction with his wifes blind friend Robert, his attitude and outlook on life changes.à Although at first he seemed afraid to associate with a blind man, Roberts outgoing personality left him with virtually noRead MoreCathedral Critical Essay1250 Words à |à 5 Pages02/01/2012 ââ¬Å"Cathedralâ⬠Critical Essay It is human nature to shy away from social situations that make us uncomfortable. Beachside Retreat of Kim-Free-Samples for Students-Myassignment
Question: Discuss about the KIMs Beachside Retreat. Answer: The discussion paper is made in the light of KIMs Beachside Retreat located on the beach at Toowoon Bay. It will take over one hour to reach the location situated north of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, by car (Voyeur.realviewtechnologies.com 2017). The detail of the resort is derived from the July 2017 edition of Virgin Australia Voyeur Magazine. The area of market interest for both the resort and the location of New South Wales will be discussed in this paper. The role that advertisement plays for reaching and influencing its chosen market is evaluated using three marketing strategies. The strategies include AIDA framework, advertising appeal and colour theory. Toowoon Bay is located on the New South Wales Central Coast. It can be reached starting north from the Sydney Opera House with just over an hour drive and an hour drive south of Newcastle (Kims Beachside Lodges 2017). New South Wales is the point of attraction for both national and international tourists. In the year-end March 2017, New South Wales have seen 33.3 million overnight visitors, which comprises of 88 percent of domestic and 12 percent of international visitors. The overnight visitor statistics have risen to 4.7 percent compared to year-end March 2016. A total of 186.4million visitor night has been spent by the tourists, who comprises of 52 percent domestic and 48 percent international tourists. The statistic shows that there has been a 5.1 percent rise in visitor night spent at year-end March 2017 compared to March 2016 (Tra.gov.au 2017). The economical statistic at the year-end March 2017 shows that a total consumption of 26.5 billion dollar by the overnight visitors has been recorded. The total consumption percentage comprises of 63 percent domestic and 37 percent international visitors. A 5.5 percent increase in overnight visitor expenditure has been recorded at year-end March 2017 (Tra.gov.au 2017). According to the statistics recorded on year-end May 2017, the top five market segments for international visitors travelling to New South Wales (NSW) are from China, New Zealand, USA, UK and South Korea. NSW receives most of its domestic visitors from the region of Brisbane and Queensland (Warren 2012). The advertisement that is published in the Virgin Australia Voyeur Magazine targets both the domestic as well as international tourists who look for spending quality time with their family at a peaceful place. The statistic provided above shows that the percentage of domestic overnight visitors to NSW is more than that of international visitors. Therefore, the advertisement target is aligned more towards the domestic visitors. Kims Beachside Retreat is a holiday resort built in the lap of nature (Warren 2012). It is built specifically as a holiday resort, for those who want to spend their holiday in leisure and luxury staying close to nature. Therefore, it is targeted towards families or couples who are travelling for casual purpose and have high income. Advertising the enterprise of KIMs Beachside Retreat in the Virgin Australia Voyeur Magazine will attract these tourists as a large percentage of domestic and international visitors coming to NSW hail from this market segment (Warren 2012). The aim of an advertising appeal is to motivate or influence target clients to give special attention or take special action towards certain services or products (Zhang 2014). KIMs have used both emotional and rational advertising appeal to persuade their customers to stay at their resort. KIMs have cleverly utilised texts and images to attract the attention of the tourists who are looking for a quiet getaway from the hassles of regular life. KIMs states that they offer Comfort and lifes simple pleasures that provokes the interest of the customers looking for a peaceful holiday (Voyeur.realviewtechnologies.com 2017). KIMs claim that its stylish beach, rainforest and hillside bungalows and villas , together with delectable chef prepared buffets, provide the perfect setting for relaxation at this beach oasis right on the doorstep of the Pacific Ocean is sure to lure the nature lovers to spend some time at this location (Voyeur.realviewtechnologies.com 2017). KIMs have also tried to ut ilise the emotional side of its clients by offering promotional discounts on booking a room that has proven to be successful in attracting more tourists. Colour plays a vital role to motivate and persuade an individual and created expected opinion, emotion or feeling (Jasper 2014). It is proven that colours are generally associated with certain emotional meanings that can be used to portray information, which appeals the emotion of a consumer while making a purchase decision (Jasper 2014). KIMs have chosen white and green as the principle colours for their advertisement that provides a sense of purity and serenity of nature that appeals the emotion as well as the interest of a tourist, especially those who love nature (Ladd-Franklin 2013). The brown wood finish of the resort rooms depict security and comfort which is highly sought by any tourist booking a room (Ladd-Franklin 2013). These colours will surely appeal the visitors looking for peaceful yet luxurious accommodation for romantic or family getaway. The purpose of the AIDA framework is to construct a message, which will influence the target market and provoke consumer purchase by attracting the attention of the customer, holding their interest and arousing desire (Budiawan, Satria and Simanjuntak 2017). The advertisement of KIMs Beachside Retreat in Virgin Australia Voyeur Magazine attracts the attention of its target market by the use of a catchy heading, wise choice of colours and beautiful images that depict a life close to nature. The tourists looking for a peaceful yet luxurious getaway close to nature and at a reasonable price rate will surely be interested to explore the details of the resort further. The chosen texts like Comfort and lifes simple pleasures and the high-quality pictures of the meals offered by them will arouse the desire of the target market to experience the products for themselves. Contact details are also provided in the advertisement for those who seek more information regarding any matter related to the resort, resulting in an action being obtained. Therefore, considering the three modes of marketing theory and the way KIMs have utilised them in its advertisement, it can be concluded that the advertisement published in Virgin Australia Voyeur Magazine edition July 2017 is sure to bring success to the purpose of KIMs beachside retreat. Theories of Cultural Diversity
Introduction Discrimination, ratio prejudice, and male chauvinism have been evident in our societies since time immemorial though some people in all generations have tried fighting it and hence it has been reducing with time. In some communities, it was openly practiced but in some it was secretively done and both the victims and the racists pretend like nothing of that kind happens.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Theories of Cultural Diversity ââ¬â Anthropological Theory: Discrimination, ratio prejudice, and male chauvinism specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More This essay analyses the written works of Hagar Salamon ââ¬Å"Between Conscious and Subconscious: Depth-to-Depth Communication in the Ethnographic Spaceâ⬠and Karen Brodkin ââ¬Å"How Jews Became White Folksâ⬠. It features on the similarities and differences of the two writings by comparing and contrasting all aspects evident e.g. the main theme s, peoples opinion, the victims (Jews and Africans). Brodkinââ¬â¢s and Salamonââ¬â¢s writings on Africans Jews and Americans The two Authors, Brodkin and Salamon, clearly introduces us to the discriminated groups and their origin in that, in both stories the victims are immigrants and they are forced to accept the ill treatments in fear of being denied everything including the little that they are allowed. Brodkin (43) starts her story by quoting how Kenneth Roberts how America was founded by the Nordic race, she clearly states that Kenneth did not consider her ancestors, Jews, as the same as him i.e. at that time Jews were not referred or treated as white people. The northwestern Europeans were the only immigrants ones who were considered and treated as people and in addition they also believed that they were biologically different. Salamon on the other hand introduces us to the chewas (masters) and baryas (slaves) who are Jews originally from Northern Ethiopia but immigrated to Israel. She talk about how the Ethiopian Jews referred to as the Beta Israel or Falasha and they live in secluded communities of their own within and outside the boundaries of other Jews in Israel. They also have the issue of skin color whereby the Chewa back in their home considered themselves as not black but que or tââ¬â¢eyem (i.e. red or brown respectively) the barya on the other hand were perceived as tequr (black) and socially inferior compared to the Chewa (Salamon 253). The ââ¬ËInferior communities usually face a lot of discrimination and deprivation of their fundamental rights for instance, the Baryas are not supposed to marry from any other communities except from their own even after gaining their freedom. Salamon gives a perfect example of one of her interviewees.Advertising Looking for essay on cultural studies? Let's see if we can help you! A 24-year-old high school teacher with perfect written and spoken Hebrew, Almaz symbolized successful integration into Israeli society. At this period in her life, she was preoccupied with the humiliating fact that despite her success, none of her Ethiopian acquaintances would risk marrying her.â⬠(Salamon 259) As you can see from the quote above Almazââ¬â¢s father was a Chewa, a son to one her previous masters, but took no responsibility of her daughter. Salamon also says that it was common for barya women to be sexually abused or even impregnated by their masters, Mammit Almazââ¬â¢s cousin consider herself lucky to have controlled her maternity by gaining freedom without a child from the chewa men. Mammit had two kids from barya men though not on her own will but to the deliberate intention of the barya men (Salamon 258). thi s shows that there were instances of male chauvinism among the freed baryas. Brodkin tells us how the Jews were after being discovered that they were the Euro-immigrant group that had sent a significant number of children to colleges in America, they faced a lot of discrimination to an extent that they were denied admission and Jewish instructors were never promoted ( Brodkin 45). Male chauvinism and racial segregation is also evident in Brodkin work than in Salamonââ¬â¢s. Brodkin comments about ââ¬Å"the GI bill of rights as the 1944 Servicemen Readjustments Actâ⬠(Brodkin 47). This was the most massive affirmative action in U.S history. This act enabled sixteen soldiers who participated in the Korean War acquire jobs by preferential hiring, small loans as capital for small enterprises, lowered interest rates on mortgage and educational benefits. Only white men were the beneficiaries of this act, white women and men from other races were not favored by this act. It is clea rly quoted that black men were never offered both employment information and opportunities in the south and those already in service were discharged dishonorably and most of them denied their benefits.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Theories of Cultural Diversity ââ¬â Anthropological Theory: Discrimination, ratio prejudice, and male chauvinism specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Black men were never admitted on white colleges and black colleges were over populated despite the end of Jewish and other Euro-ethnic restrictions in other words the discrimination was shifted from the Euro-ethnic groups to the African Americans. The two stories show that there must an external influence for the liberation of to take place. The American Jews required the economic recession and the great demand for labor after the war. This led to the enactment of new statutes, as quote above, that promoted the rise and recognition bot h socially and economically (Brodkin, p 51). The baryas on the other hand required Salamon.according to Almazââ¬â¢s dream for them to claim their liberties. In the dream the light skinned lady who holds Almazââ¬â¢s hand after she takes the 50 shekels from her is assumed to be Salamon. She, saw Salamon, in the dream propheciesââ¬â¢ that when Almaz attains the age of 28 she shall lead a revolution that would help all baryas attain their freedom (Salamon 260). Salamonââ¬â¢s and Brodkinââ¬â¢s work also contrast in the way the groups which are considered inferior are liberated from their position. After Salamon interviews a number of baryas who are willing to share their common experiences as slaves but never willing to talk about their personal experiences, she discovers that most of the freed baryas, e.g. Mammit, struggled for their freedom without any support or aid of any kind from the authority (government of the day) or economic circumstances (Salamon 258). On the ot her hand the Jews in America did not actually fight for their liberation but they were actually helped by the government as brodkin quotes in her summary, ââ¬Å"The myth that Jews pulled themselves up by their own bootstraps ignores the fact that it took federal programs to create the conditions whereby the abilities of Jews and other European Immigrants could be recognized and rewarded rather than denigrated and denied. The GI Bill, the FHA and the VA mortgages were forms of affirmative action that allowed Male Jews and other Euro-American men to become suburban home owners and to get the training that allowed them toâ⬠¦ become professionals, technicians, Salesmen and managers in a growing economyâ⬠(Brodkin 51)Advertising Looking for essay on cultural studies? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More The Jews in America are openly discriminated and the government even enacted laws, before the war, that helped in discriminating the south eastern Euro-immigrants from accessing education, employment and financial assistance from all aspects of the economy. In Israel the situation is different and the slavery is not openly done and itââ¬â¢s very hard for anyone to discover it. Salamon had been interviewing a Chewa for months and an old barya severed them tea frequently. When Salamon asked about her after noticing that she was always silent and her presence was never noticed by the hosts, Salamon managed to ask about the lady but this was ignored by the hosts who never commented about it this clearly explained to her that she was a barya. Both the chewa and the barya believe that exposing this idea of slavery to outsiders is considered as ââ¬Å"a grave breach of faithâ⬠(Salamon 254). Lastly in both stories the ââ¬Ëmixed breedsââ¬â¢ are considered as inferior, Brodkin wrote that Higham suggested that ââ¬Å"the cross between any of the three European races and a Jew is a Jewâ⬠(Brodkin, p 43). Salamon also says that Almazââ¬â¢s father was a the son of her motherââ¬â¢s, (Habtesh) master meaning she was a cross breed but still treated as a barya (Salamon 259) Conclusion The two authors write about very different times but both of them comment on three main issues (themes) racial segregation, discrimination and male Chauvinism. The victims as we have seen above are immigrant who are mistreated and deprived of their rights by others who consider themselves superior. Use The Best Colors To Increase Your Engagement While several factors go into making an image its very best, color is one of the mostà essential ingredients. Color psychology has proven time and time again that we can convey emotions simply by using a particular color! In May of 2015, I did a two-month study on the popularity of a given color in 's graphics. Since we typically use a three-color palette for our blog graphics, I was able to give appropriate rankings to each of the three colors usedà to see how they each performed. I quickly realized that certain colors might be performing betterà simply because we use them more often, so I then compared the popularity percentage to the usage percentageà to find an overall color grade. Basically, I nerded out super hard and used data to see what colors performed the best. Use a graph like this to review and test your color schemes. At the end of my study, we found that blue and green were our highest performing colors! If we look at color psychology, both of these colors reflect a calm, clean, comforting presence which seems toà be the perfect match to the experience we want our readers to have, especially if they're new to the blog. Blue is also one of our brand colors. The other two top-performing colors were none other then red and orange. While blue and green provide a safe, calm place for our readers, orange and red are perfect complements becauseà they grab our audience's attention and spark theirà interest. Blue and green and orange and red are a dynamic set of colors that will help you succeed. #colorPsychology tells us that red and orange represent passion, energy, and success.à I couldn't imagine a better pair for blue and green's calm, comforting presence than the passion and success of orange and red. Together, they seemed to makeà a dynamic duo, so I tried using those color pairs over the past year... Out of our top 10 posts, 8à of them have either blue or green as the main color. The remaining two blog posts have orange as their main color. Absolutely none of our top performing posts contain any otherà main colors! By understanding which colors performed better, we were able to helpà increase our page views byà 833.76%! You can do this, too! Simply follow the steps below to see which colors work best for your brand: Review your blog post header graphics and write down the primary, secondary, and third colors. Defineà a ranking to the most prevalent 3 colors in your graphics. (i.e. 3 points for the primary color, 2 for the secondary color, and 1 for the third most-used color.) Look at the total shares eachà post received during a set amount of time. For more thanà x amount ofà shares (at , we did per 100 shares), give each color that set amount of ranked points that you decided on above. (e.g. If the color blue was the primary color in a post that received 300 shares, blueà would have 9à total points, 3+3+3. If red was the second most-used colorà in the post with 300 shares, it would have 6à points, 2+2+2.) At the end of each week, track the overall totals and see which colors perform the highest. After 8 solid weeks, you should start to see trends stick out, revealing your top-performing colors. While everyone has different colors that matchà their brand and audience demographics, it's essential to test out the waters and find the colors that work best for you! But when in doubt... use blue or green. Recommended Reading: What 20 Studies Say About the Best Times to Post on Social Media 3. Use The Types Of Social Media Images That Get The Most Attention Now that you know your target image size and top-performing colors, it's time to decide what type of image toà use. While almost anything can be an image- screenshots, illustrations, photos, quotes, GIFs- there are a few standout images youà can depend upon to receive the most engagement. Quotes Quotes come in all shapes and sizes. Maybe it's from a speaker, conference, or a book that you've recently read. Or, maybe it's from an article or blogà online.à No matter theà form or social network, quotes can be an excellent way to reach your audience with images. Simply find a quote you like and pair it with a color or simple background. The dynamic duo will allow your readers to ponder, identify with, and in return, share your quote. For example, at we started sharing quotes from our blog authors on Facebook, and we received 98% growth in engagements and 91% growth in clickthroughs. Facebook isn't alone! GIFs GIFs are one of the office's favorite things both in our work chats and on social media because theyà perform well, all while bringing a smile. If thatà wasn't good enough, infographics are also the perfect pair for one of the top-performing visual bookmarking site: Pinterest. Automate Your Images For Social Media To Save Time As the graphic designer on 's marketing team, I live and breathe images every, single, day, so although creating your graphics well is super important, so is making sure you're efficient when it comes to uploadingà them to your social messages. After all, time is money, and money is time you could be spending on other projects. This is exactly where is a HUGE time saver for me. Let me introduce you to a magical thing called 'Social Helpers'. What Are Social Helpers in ? But First, I should probably back up and start with Social Templates. Social Templates isà a great way to reuse your social sharing schedule time and time again. That means that you can create a social campaign just one time (with the best times and right frequency), save it as a template, and then apply it to all other forms of content from there on out. Just one time! (That's hours of savings right there.) In case you'd like to see it in action, here's a live demo of social templates. If that wasn't awesome enough, there's three key componentsà of social templates that saveà us even more time. Within each social template, youà can create an individual message 'template' using social helpers. Let me show you how it works: Within , Social Templates live to the left of your social campaign. 2. If you click on a Social Template, you can modify each and every single message within that template. This is a great way to personalize your messages for each network. 3. Do you see those blue things? Those are social helpers! There are text, image, and video helpers. 4. Here's where the magic comes in. Are you ready? You can add specific helpers toà your messages so whenever the template is applied, rather than writing that message 10x or uploading that same image 10x, you only have to do it once! Wherever that helper is located,à the content will auto-populate to all your messages at one time. What Does That Mean for Social Images? The brilliance of Social Image Helpers, is that I no longer have to upload images to every individual message for every piece of content. If your team is like ours, we have about 17 messages per piece of content, so before Social Image Helpers, I uploadedà the same image 17 times. That took a lot of time! Time spent I could be doing better things like image creation, design strategy, or connecting with our audience. With Social Helpers, I can now do what I had to do 17 times, just once. Once! This saves me so much time, and allows me to focus more time on what makes an image great, rather than worrying about how it'll publish across every single network. Social templates and social helpers take the guess-work out of it, and allow me to quickly place my images, moving onto the next thing. Now You Know How To Make Successfulà Social Media Images From Beginning To End Social media images can take quite a few different forms, colors, and sizes- but with this data, you've found exactly what equation works best for each social network. If you happen to be in a rush or maybe you're just starting out, use aà 2:1 ratio for your image size, incorporate blue or green with a pop of orange or red in your color scheme, stick to the four main image types: GIFs, quotes, titles, and infographics, and save time uploading with Social Image Helpers. Without much time at all, you'll be on your way to success! What colors, sizes, and image types have worked best for you? Share below!
